Arc light is a short circuit caused by ionized gas (air) between a charged body and the ground or between charged bodies. High energy arc light faults manifest as electrical explosions. They release a large amount of energy in the form of radiation, heat, strong light, and high-pressure waves.

1) The principle is simple: by detecting arc light and passing through flow blocking, the protection structure is simple.

2) Fast and reliable action: By detecting the arc light signal, the protection action time of the entire busbar is 5-7ms; using a dual criterion of detecting the arc light signal and overcurrent lockout, reliable protection action can be achieved; The entire system continuously self checks, fully demonstrating the reliability of the entire system.

3) Fault location: The control part can display the location of the arc light occurrence point, making it easy to quickly locate and handle faults and restore power supply.

4) Equipped with circuit breaker failure protection function: When the main circuit breaker refuses to move, a trip command can be issued to trip the previous circuit breaker.

5) Through arc light and current discrimination, selective protection can be implemented for each section of the busbar, suitable for various operating modes, and the protection does not need to be switched under various operating modes.

Principle of arc light protection

The principle of arc light protection is shown in Figure 1, and its action is judged based on two conditions that occur during faults, namely arc light and current increment. When both arc light and current increment are detected, the system issues a trip command. When only arc light or current increment is detected, an alarm signal is issued without issuing a trip command.

Composition of arc light protection system

The arc light protection system consists of a main unit, a current unit, a sensor unit, an arc light sensor, and connecting cables. The arc light sensor can be placed at any position of the switchgear (usually installed in the busbar room to detect busbar faults). Based on the actual physical location of the arc light sensor, it can achieve the function of protecting zones and display the location of the fault on the arc light control unit. This function can reduce the power outage processing time and enable quick restoration of power supply.
